Zinc - Essential Trace Mineral

Zinc is a biologically essential trace mineral and antioxidant critical to healthy metabolism, hormone levels, immune function, and skin and mucosal membranes. Zinc also supports muscle, bone, kidney, liver, pancreas, eye, brain, and prostate health.

Studies have determined that Zinc is a cofactor in many biological processes including protein synthesis. A large number of proteins that play an essential role in the regulation of gene express are thought to contain zinc and therefore zinc is believed to be essential for healthy cell division and growth and assists in the cell's formation of DNA (the cell's basic genetic material). Zinc has also been shown to play an important role in supporting protein, fat, carbohydrate, and energy metabolism. This essential trace mineral also plays a role in the formation and activity of insulin in the body.

Eye Health

Zinc plays a key role in the maintenance of vision.  It is present in high concentration in the eye, particularly the retina.  Zinc deficiency is believed to play a role in altered vision and detrimental changes to the retina.

Men's Health

Male fertility appears to be influenced by zinc.  Infertile males typically have lower seminal plasma zinc, with normal or reduced blood zinc. Clinical research has also been shown to suggest that short-term dietary depletion of zinc results in reduced serum testosterone levels.

The Chelation Process

Since zinc supplements can create stomach upset, Chelated Zinc uses the process of chelation to bind the zinc to amino acids that aid in the mineral's absorption and reduce the chance of stomach upset and nausea.

Note:

Taking zinc with dairy products may interfere with body’s absorption of zinc.

Factoids
  • The word "zinc" originates from the German word "zin" meaning, tin.
  • Every cell requires zinc in order to multiply.
  • Zinc is needed in order for our bodies to be able to taste and smell.
