| Panax Ginseng
Panax Ginseng, commonly known as "Asian" or "Korean" ginseng, is primarily known for being an adaptogen. The term "adaptogen" has been defined as a substance with the ability to "increase resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stress and build up general vitality, including the physical and mental capacity for work."
Panax Ginseng's active components are primarily ginsenosides, which have been shown to benefit cell and tissue health in a variety of ways. Research shows that Panax ginseng may support cognitive and organ function, immune system effectiveness, and healthy blood sugar levels.
Recent studies suggest the antioxidant and organ-protective actions of ginseng are linked to enhanced nitric oxide synthesis in the lungs, heart, and kidney and genitals. Enhanced nitric oxide synthesis could contribute to ginseng-associated blood vessel dilation. This organ-specific nitric oxide synthesis has also shown to inhibit the brain's hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal response, lessening the effects of stress.
Panax Ginseng is thought to support healthy immune system function by stimulating “natural killer-cell” activity.
Panax Ginseng has also shown to promote the growth of healthy intestinal flora.
Ginseng -- Supporting Healthy Blood Sugar Levels & More
Ginseng is thought to support healthy blood sugar levels. One study of Panax Ginseng followed 36 subjects newly diagnosed with non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Each subject was given a dosage of 100 or 200 mg per day for eight weeks. The study showed improved fasting blood glucose levels, elevated mood, and improved psychophysical performance on a numbered diagram test.
Additional Panax Ginseng studies are still being conducted in the areas of hormonal balance support, erectile function, immune support, and cardiovascular health.
