The peppermint plant (menthe piperita) is a cross between water mint and spearmint native to Europe and North America and known to pop up voluntarily in gardens. Extracted from the herb by steam distillation, peppermint oil is used orally and topically to soothe a wide range of health ailments. The main active compound in peppermint is menthol, which gives peppermint its fragrant aroma and causes a tingling, cooling sensation when applied to skin. In addition to menthol, the peppermint plant is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, omega-3s, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.
Soothing aches and pains. Topically, peppermint oil is used to soothe aches and pains. Rubbing the oil into sore tissues, cramped muscles, or aching gums can help relieve pain. For headaches, massage peppermint oil into temples and the back of the neck to relieve tension, making sure to avoid eyes or open wounds, or use as aromatherapy to stimulate the senses and reduce pressure.
Preventing bacterial blemishes. Peppermint oil also boasts potent antiseptic properties. As a result, it is often used on the scalp to reduce dandruff buildup and directly on the skin to prevent pimples and bacterial blemishes from forming.
Releasing respiratory congestion with aromatherapy. Often used for aromatherapy, peppermint vapor can be helpful in treating respiratory discomfort. The menthol in peppermint oil helps clear mucus out of the respiratory tract and eases cough and cold symptoms, including nasal congestion. The refreshingly vibrant scent perks up the senses and provides your body with a natural burst of energy and alertness. For the benefits of aromatherapy, rub peppermint oil on your chest, or distil a few drops in warm water and inhale the vapors. As an added bonus, some studies suggest that simply smelling peppermint oil may reduce food cravings and help satisfy hunger.
