    Product Information

L-tryptophan is called an “essential” amino acid because the body can’t make it. It must be acquired from food. Tryptophan is the least plentiful of all 22 amino acids but is found in most proteins.

Tryptophan, a natural sedative, is important for the development and functioning of many organs in the body. During digestion, tryptophan is converted to 5-hydroxy-tryptophan (5-HTP), which is then converted into serotonin, an essential neurotransmitter for regulating appetite, sleep, mood, memories, and even pain perception.

Serotonin supports a healthy nervous system by facilitating signals between nerve cells and also promotes healthy digestion and gastrointestinal function, which in turn promote comfort and ease.

GABA-or Gamma Aminobutyric Acid, is a gamma neurotransmitter. GABA is a substance that transmits a signal across the synapses between brain cells. GABA is largely responsible for our sleep cycles, body temperature, and the activities of our pituitary gland.
GABA is a “non essential” amino acid found in large quantities in the hypothalamus, the center in the brain that controls the pituitary gland and functioning. Because GABA is a substance naturally found in the human body and in many common foods, so it is a generally safe supplement. Studies have shown that GABA has a substantial effect on the central nervous system, thus aiding in relaxation and stress reduction. In the U.S. millions of Americans struggle to fall asleep each night, including about 10 percent who suffer from chronic sleep disorders. Maintaining optimal GABA levels may be imperative for restful sleep and avoiding having difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep and waking up too early in the morning.
Additionally, GABA’s natural stimulation of the pituitary gland leads to the release of human growth hormone (or “HGH”), which supports cell growth, reproduction, and regeneration as well as overall vitality. In this way, GABA contributes to an anti aging effect.

Taurine is a type of amino acid found throughout the body. It is particularly concentrated in the brain, eyes, heart, and muscles. Unlike most other amino acids, it is not used to build proteins in the body. It is classified as a “conditionally essential” amino acid, yet it supports GABA production (calming the nervous system) and in so doing helps lower stressful cortisol levels.

Magnesium is a mineral that's crucial to the body's function. Magnesium helps keep blood pressure normal, bones strong, and the heart rhythm steady. People often don’t realize that too much calcium, which contracts muscles, creates tension if taken without the muscle-relaxing benefits of magnesium to keep things in balance! It is best to take magnesium in the evening, when it can act as a light relaxant and promote good sleep.

Lithium is a trace mineral in the same class as essential electrolyte minerals like sodium and potassium. Many authorities believe lithium to be a vital nutrient. When present in natural water supplies, mental wellness is higher than when lithium is absent.

Glycine helps supply energy for and relaxes nerve and muscle cells. Some studies have shown glycine to be helpful in memory retrieval in people who are overworked or jet-lagged, which contributes to better moods when under stress and sleep deprived. Glycine is also involved in cellular detoxification and healthy DNA and RNA production, so the body is under less internal stress from normal wear and tear.

Lysine is another “essential amino acid,” meaning it is necessary for human health, but the body cannot make it. Best known for helping produce collagen in the body and for mending cold sores, lysine supports serotonin production and relaxation as well as the nitrogen balance (healing muscles and tensions from stress). By helping balance too much arginine, lysine also plays a role in helping the body deal with normal viral exposures with more ease.

    • Tryptophan has the potential to cause serotonin syndrome when combined with antidepressants of the MAOI or SSRI class or other strongly serotonergic drugs.
    • Potential side effects of tryptophan include nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, lightheadedness, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, sedation, euphoria, and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements).
    • GABA is an all natural supplement, but can still cause dangerous interaction problems if taken with certain other supplements or drugs. Individuals who have been diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, encephalopathy due to liver disease, or ADD with hyperactivity should not use GABA. Women who are pregnant or nursing should also avoid using GABA. Always consult a physician before choosing to administer over the counter supplements to a minor, and be aware that certain drug allergies may make you sensitive to possible side effects from the use of GABA.
    • Clozapine (Clozaril) interacts with glycine. Clozapine is used to help treat schizophrenia. Taking glycine along with clozapine (Clozaril) might decrease the effectiveness of clozapine (Clozaril). Do not take glycine if you are taking clozapine (Clozaril).
